“The House That Built Me” wasn’t originally written for Miranda Lambert. Several years before the song’s debut in 2010, country music songwriters Tom Douglas and Allen Shamblin wrote the track with a male singer in mind. In fact, Blake Shelton was the first artist that they sent the demo.

Not only is the beautiful craftsman style Gamble house an amazing place to visit for architecture fans, but movie fans will appreciate it too. The garage was used as Doc Brown’s house in Back to the Future and the living room shown above was used in Zathura. I have visited the house for free on two different occasions. You can visit it for free on the Museums of the Arroyo Day or during the City of Pasadena’s ArtNight. According to the songwriters, the inspiration behind the song came from a conversation between Allen Shamblin and his wife. They were discussing the fact that they had to sell their house and how emotionally attached they had become to it. Shamblin suggested that Douglas write a song about the topic, and “The House That Built Me” was born. In other words, it was the rare gem that was as successful critically as it was commercially. So it stands to reason there's an interesting story behind the song. The story isn’t completely false, Lambert herself has said that when she heard it with Shelton by her side, she thought it was so incredible and had an instant emotional response.
